Tips for Maintaining Quartz Countertops

Here are tips we have for maintaining your quartz countertops.

Kitchens benefit greatly from having large and durable countertops. They give you the surface area you need to prepare all kinds of dishes, while also improving the look of your kitchen overall. A popular material for kitchen countertops is quartz, and one of the reasons for this is because keeping it looking great is relatively easy. With that said, there are still some maintenance procedures you’ll have to perform. Here are tips we have for maintaining your quartz countertops.

Don’t Put Anything Hot on Them

Quartz is not one of the most heat-resistant countertop materials available. Unlike something like granite, quartz is actually fairly susceptible to heat damage. That’s why you should keep hot items off of the surfaces of quartz countertops. If you need to set down something hot, use a hot pad to keep the heat away from the countertop’s surface.

Don’t Use Strong Cleaning Chemicals

Quartz countertops should be kept away from harsh cleaning chemicals because these chemicals can cause damage to the surface. These are some of the cleaning chemicals you won’t want to use on quartz countertops:

  • Bleach
  • Nail polish remover
  • Acid-based cleaning items
  • Stainless steel cleaners
  • Alkaline cleaning items

As a general rule of thumb, you should only use cleaning products that specifically state that they can be used on quartz surfaces. If you’re currently getting a quartz countertop installed, you can also ask the company that’s installing it to give you ideas for what cleaning products to use.

Don’t Clean Your Countertop By Using Abrasive Materials

Another way to damage a quartz countertop is to use abrasive cleaning materials. Even using sharp utensils, like knives, can scratch the surface. This is why you should use more gentle materials, like soft cloths, when cleaning your quartz countertop. If you have to use a knife, you should get out a cutting board so you don’t affect your countertop’s surface. Some knives could also be dulled more quickly if they’re used on quartz surfaces.
