How to Care for Slate Countertops

Learn how to care for your slate countertops.

Slate countertops are beautiful and classy, adding a strong statement to any kitchen design. They are durable and versatile, but they do require countertop maintenance to keep them looking beautiful. In a world of granite and marble, those people who are drawn to the beauty of slate know that it is worth the work involved. If you have opted for this high-end surface in your kitchen, here are some tips to keep it looking great.

Avoid Acids

Acids can etch slate and cause permanent discoloration that is almost impossible to repair. There are many sources for acids that you need to be aware of. The main one is foods, like citrus and vinegar, that are acidic. Be careful when cooking or prepping these on your slate counters.  The other source is household cleaners which sometimes have acids in them. Check your cleaners carefully before you use them on your slate surfaces. This includes natural cleaners, since those often include vinegar. When you’re looking for a cleaner, look for one with a neutral pH or ask us for recommendations.

Don’t Drop Stuff

This seems like an odd tip because we don’t usually drop things on purpose. However, we also don’t usually worry if a pot slips and lands on the countertop. Slate is very strong in the sense that it is fairly resistant to everyday wear and tear, but slate is also incredibly brittle. In fact, it is one of the most brittle types of natural stone, which means that dropping something on it, like a cast iron pan, could crack it. And once it cracks, it has to be replaced, so use caution when carrying things or storing heavy things over your slate surfaces.

Seal the Surface

Slate is a highly porous natural stone which means it is prone to absorption of liquids and can be easily stained. The way to prevent this is to periodically seal the surface with a penetrating sealer. The sealer will ensure that nothing penetrates your slate and causes damage. If you spill water on your surface and it doesn’t immediately bead up, you know it’s time to seal again.

Dust Regularly

Dust accumulates pretty rapidly so try to remove it as often as possible.  If you can dust your slate countertops everyday, that’s great, but if not, shoot for at least once a week.  Use a microfibre towel that doesn’t have any abrasive fibers so that your don’t risk scratching the surface.
