Caring for a Marble Fireplace: Here’s How

Fireplaces make a home warmer and more enjoyable.

Marble is a natural stone that instantly makes a home appear elegant. Here at Rock Tops, we not only install marble countertops, but we install marble fireplaces as well. Marble is a natural stone that’s ideal for a homeowner who wants a high-end look. It’s also suitable for places in the home where there’s not a lot of traffic. It’s a material that you don’t want to stain if you can help it. There are nuances to taking care of a marble fireplace, and we’re going to share them with you today. Keep reading to learn more.

Make Sure There’s Proper Ventilation and Remove Ash

Some ash and coal accumulation won’t harm wood-burning fireplaces. However, ash and coal shouldn’t go higher than two inches. So long as the firebox has adequate ventilation, the smoke will not bother you. The wood can burn without fuming. The ashes will settle without flowing out into the floor of the fireplace, the surround, or the chase.

Regularly Seal Your Marble Fireplace

Use a natural stone sealant to protect your marble fireplace. To test the seal and see if you need another application, you can perform a water test. To do so, pour about three inches in diameter on the surface of your fireplace in a few spots. Let the water sit for 30 minutes. If dark marks are evident, then you know that it’s time to reseal your fireplace.

Clean Your Marble Fireplace Regularly

To do so, make sure that you use a cleaning agent made for marble. Vinegar or normal household cleaning supplies might damage and degrade the fireplace. Also, not heeding what cleaner you use may cause a marble fireplace to be less stain-resistant.

Remove Stains

Never let stains get on your marble fireplace. If so, what you can do is contact the service department here at Rock Tops so that we can take care of that for you. Marble is a fine natural stone that you indeed want to preserve, so be careful of drinking or eating too close to it. Also, make sure to never use bleach to remove stains. Bleach can severely fade or damage the coloring.
